Icy Mountain is finally here!

Postby levelengine » 26 Feb 2009 02:20

After hours and hours of work, Icy Mountain is ready! :D
When you play, start from the level icy_mountain and look around for the 9 objectives that there are. :)
They all have a specific challenge and try to hit all the textboxes you can. They can be very important.
This idea has come from mountain trials, but I gave my own version a snowy look.
I have 5 screenshots.

You've threatened my masculinity, Yoshis_fan. Guess I'll need to step it up a little. Although, for me, BowserJr will always be my favorite level designer!

I've played one level by BowserJr, already. That was winter wonderland, are there more?

Off the top of my head, there's also Mountain Trials. You already have it; it's part of the game's official release package. You'd have to ask him what else he's done.

You're greatest talent, for me, is all the little things you do to create objects, like the school doors for example, or the ladder you made in another (I believe that was you). You're ability to take ordinary objects and create something new, yet familiar, is astounding! I love the detail you put into your levels--they make a great payoff!

Could my level end up in 1.8?
And one thing, did you see the two peaks? And the turtleboss's names?
They were Alain and Pilon. :D
And I have great places to get ideas from. :D :D :D

That's a question for those who work on the game, like FluXy, BowserJr, and a few others. I'm just a level participant like yourself.

And I have great places to get ideas from. :D :D :D

I know; the majority of them are mine.

Please do not attach more than 500 KB of Screenshots per level as this currently overflows our board attachment quota.
You can always use an external server or hoster for many Screenshots but try to not use them for levels.

We currently have too many levels on SVN without a good quality that is why currently rarely new levels get on SVN.
We can not maintain that many levels but we maybe have something nice ready for level designers in ~2 months :D
Be in for a surprise :P

[EDIT]

With not maintained levels i mostly mean the ones not linked on the Worlds.
If i didn't read your post but it was important you can send me a PM.

You're right, Robwood, but if FluXy would tell everything the surprise would be gone.

Right, so why aren't you replacing the poor quality levels? And by replace, I mean removing the rubbish and using these better contributions, even if it means reorganizing the worlds a little bit.

A lot of the "good" user created levels are not good for overworlds. But yeah, some of the non-overworld levels on SVN are very old and boring, so can definitely be removed or seriously revamped.

I've always been curious as to what that exactly means. What makes levels good for overworlds? Do they need to be individual levels with similar themes or something?

An overworld level should:
have no complete story of its own, ideally supplementing the main story (which doesn't exist :P )
have only one exit and one objective (because the game can't handle multiple exits yet)
not have many extra levels around it - sublevels are fine, but if it goes through a few other levels, these should be completely seperate
Not require the player to have read any information about how to play the level before starting
not contain tricks that allow for very fast or easy completion
not be too long, too hard or requiring special tricks to finish.
roughly follow a left to right progression, with little backtracking (not essential, but most levels in any platformer will)

That's all I can think of right now...

Sauer2 did some nice updates to the World levels but for keeping up we need a lot more of these nice small changes/updates.

I don't think we should get rid (replace) of old levels but to restructure the parts which are boring or if they don't conform to our design guidelines.
We should only remove a level if it's completely way off everything.

I already finished the core-story and it's now public see here :)

Could the people who play this level let me know what objectives have been completed? :)

These are the 9 objectives:

#1 - The two Peaks

#2 - Crash Course

#3 - Secret of the Red Hot Chili Plant

#4 - Maze

#5 - Crazy Train

#6 - Skyvivor

#7 - DHQ

#8 - Riddlemania

#9 - Underwater Old School

(Yoshis_Fan has completed all of them!)

I will list the people who did each challenge somehow. Try to do all 9 for added fun!
Okay? :?:
